Mosaic Buying Guide: Mesh, Grout Lines, and What to Check Before You Order

Oct. 26, 2026

Mosaic looks like the easiest tile to order. Small pieces, pre-mounted on sheets, just glue and grout. In practice, it's the product where small details cause the biggest headaches. Here's what to get right before you order.

1. Mounting: mesh, paper, or loose — decide first

Most stone mosaic ships in one of three forms:

  • Mesh-mounted: chips glued to a fiberglass mesh sheet. The standard for floors and most walls — fast to install, forgiving on uneven surfaces.

  • Paper-faced: chips glued face-down to paper, removed after setting. Common for fine marble mosaic where a perfectly flat face matters, but it demands a more skilled installer.

  • Loose chips: no backing at all. Only for artists and custom patterns — don't order loose for a commercial job unless your installer asked for it.

Confirm the mounting method in the quote. "Mosaic" alone doesn't tell your installer what they're getting.

2. Grout lines are the look

With mosaic, the grout is not a detail — it's half the visible surface. Two things to settle before you order:

  • Joint width: tight joints (1–2 mm) read modern and seamless; wider joints (3 mm+) read rustic and forgive uneven chips. The same stone looks like a different product depending on this choice.

  • Grout color: white grout brightens the pattern, grey grout hides dirt in commercial floors, dark grout makes the pattern pop. Pick it before the tile ships, not after the installer asks.

Ask your supplier for an installed photo of the exact pattern with grout — a dry sheet photo hides the joint effect completely.

3. Mesh quality is the hidden failure point

A mosaic sheet is only as good as its mesh. Cheap mesh stretches, tears during transport, or lets chips pop off when the installer handles the sheet. What to ask:

  • Is the mesh alkali-resistant fiberglass? Standard mesh degrades in cement-based adhesive over time.

  • Are the chips fully bonded — no loose pieces when you flex the sheet gently?

  • Is the sheet size consistent (usually 12x12 inch)? Mixed sheet sizes turn a simple grid layout into a puzzle.

If a supplier can't answer these three questions, that's your answer.

4. Expect batch variation — and approve the lot

Stone mosaic is cut from natural blocks, and no two blocks are identical. Veining, background tone, and even chip thickness shift between batches. This is normal — but it has to be managed:

  • Ask for current-batch photos of the actual sheets, not catalog photos.

  • For large orders, a dry-lay photo of several sheets side by side shows whether the batch reads uniform on a wall.

  • Order 10–15% overage. Matching a mosaic pattern months later from a different batch is nearly impossible.

5. Shape changes the job, not just the look

Hexagon, basketweave, penny round, herringbone, subway — each shape installs differently:

  • Hexagon and penny round forgive uneven walls but eat grout and take longer to set.

  • Basketweave and herringbone look high-end but punish any sheet that isn't perfectly square.

  • Subway and brick patterns are the fastest to install and the easiest to repair later.

Match the shape to your installer's skill level, not just to the design board.

6. Check before the container seals

Mosaic sheets are light but fragile at the edges — chipped corners on a sheet show up as a broken pattern on the wall. Before the container closes:

  • Confirm packing in rigid cartons, then wooden crates — loose sheets in a bag will arrive as a jigsaw.

  • Ask for a photo of the packed crates and a sheet count per carton so you can verify on arrival.

  • For wet areas (showers, pools), confirm the stone is suitable for constant water contact and sealed as recommended.

That's the short version. Mosaic rewards buyers who check the mesh, the joints, and the batch — and punishes everyone who orders on the catalog photo alone.

If you're planning a mosaic order and want a second pair of eyes on a quote or a batch photo, send it over. We look at this stone every day.
